Winter Water Woes

Have you noticed an unusual abundance of acorns this fall or fuzzier-than normal woollybear caterpillars? They may be a sign of a cold, hard winter! In fact, the 2020 edition of the Farmers’ Almanac predicts that two-thirds of the country will face a colder-than-normal winter season. Freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your home’s plumbing if you are unprepared. Take steps now to avoid winter water woes.

Prepare for Freezing Temperatures

The best time to prepare your home for winter is before freezing temperatures arrive. In addition to finding your snow shovel and stocking up on firewood, your home’s plumbing needs attention.

Check these items off your winter preparation list—they’ll save you time and money in the long run:

  • Drain hoses and store—Empty of all water and store in a dry location.
  • Turn off outside water and drain faucets—Find the valve to your outside water and close it for the winter season. Then drain outdoor faucets to ensure they are clear.
  • Winterize your irrigation systems—Drain your irrigation system and follow the proper seasonal irrigation shutdown for your system.

Don’t Wait for an Emergency

A snowstorm is no time for a broken water heater. Regular draining and cleaning of your water heater can prevent plumbing emergencies and extend the life of your water heater. In general, a water heater lasts 8-12 years. If your water heater is past its prime, now may be the right time to consider a replacement.

Insulate Plumbing Appliances

Plumbing appliances oftentimes are installed in unconditioned spaces or rooms without heat, like a garage. When temperatures drop below freezing, the water inside and supplied to the appliance can freeze. This can ruin an appliance(s) and possibly cause pipes to burst as the water expands when it freezes. Proper insulation of pipes, water heaters and even water treatment systems will prevent frozen water accidents.

Clean Your Gutters

Did you know a clogged gutter can affect your home’s plumbing? When debris is in the downspout water gets blocked and can freeze. This adds to the blockage and the weight debris in the gutter. A clear downspout will allow water to flow through and exit the gutter.  The best way to unfreeze gutters is to keep them from getting frozen in the first place by clearing out debris that leads to water buildup.
